While contemplating the 50th anniversary of Gerry Anderson's Thunderbirds; I remembered this unusual chapter in Thunderbirds history; Thunderbirds 2086. Thunderbirds 2086 was a dubbed version of a Japanese anime series called Science Rescue Squadron Technovoyager. Both versions of the show follow the adventures of a futuristic rescue force that operated in the year 2086. The dubbed version utilized the name Thunderbirds and dealt with the organization International Rescue. Besides the name and the premise there is no connection to the classic Supermarionation series. I do understand that it was co production between ITC and Fuji Television. In fact, sound effects and muscial cues from classic Supermarionation series as well as Space: 1999 crop up throughout the series.
I'd be lying if I said I disliked the show. It was certainly well made for its time. I watched it throughout 1983. It had a great assortment of vehicles and hardware. The stories were well written. It had as much in common with captain Scarlet and the Mysterons as it did the premise of Thunderbirds. It's certainly an interesting footnote in the history of Thunderbirds fandom.
